American shooting guard Austin Rettig is Manchester Giants’ third new signing of the summer.

Rettig, 23, is renowned for his exciting style of play and outrageous dunks and is sure to bring some highlights to the Powerleague Trafford Sportsdome in the new season, which gets underway in September.

Hailing from Texas, Rettig studied at the University of Tampa playing for the Tampa Spartans and comes to the BBL for his rookie year as a professional.

Last season, he averaged 14 PPG, a shooting percentage of 41% and 70% from the free throw line.

He becomes the first player to join the Giants on a work permit since the club returned to the BBL in 2012 – the club successfully applied last year for the home office licence to sign non-EU passport players.

Giants coach Danny Byrne said: “We’ve done a lot of homework on Austin and we are delighted to have signed him.

“He is very team focused, a humble guy and he’s going to suit the way I want to play, and also suit the guys we’ve already got.

“His highlight reels are crazy, there are some ridiculous dunks in there, and hopefully we can help him launch his professional career.

“With him being our first true American import, it was very important to get the right guy.

“We spent more than two months looking at him, spoke to lots of coaches and players who knew of him and have been very thorough in our research.

“We looked at other players, but we were always drawn back to Austin and everyone we spoke to backed up my initial gut feeling about signing him.”

The Giants’ new number 10 Rettig said: “I am beyond excited to start my career as a Giant. I am looking forward to playing for coach Byrne.”

Rettig is due to arrive in the UK imminently, and could make his first appearance for the club against USA Select on September 3. Tickets are available now.

Season tickets are also still available, priced at £160 for adults, £120 for concessions, £90 for juniors and £300 for a family of five.
